MoU Signed For Prevention and Cure of Corneal Blindness
College of Ophthalmology & Allied Vision Sciences (COAVS) arranged seminar on prevention of corneal blindness. Dr. Amjad Saqib, Founder/Director, Akhuwat; Maulana Raghib Naeemi, Principal, Darul-Aloom, Jamia Naeemia; Prof. Dr. Khalid Masood Gondal ,Vice Chancellor King Edward Medical University, Prof. Asad Aslam Khan, Principal/DG COAVS; Prof. Khalil Rana, Rtd. Professor of Ophthalmology, King Edward Medical College, addressed the seminar. Prof. Asad Aslam Khan told that corneal blindness is the second leading cause of blindness in Pakistan (11.8%) and burden of corneal blindness on the individual and the wider community can be huge, particularly as it tends to affect people at a relatively younger age. On the occasion, an MoU was signed between COAVS and Akhuwat under which Akhuwat has created an endowment fund for providing financial support to deserving poor patients for cornea transplant and COAVS will provide free cornea transplant facilities to patients having Corneal Blindness. It was also decided that seminars on awareness and corneal donation will be arranged in different parts of the country in which religious scholars will be invited. Maulana Raghib Naeemi termed this cause as “Yanf-au-Naas” meaning for beneficence of human kind. While sharing his views, he said, scholars and doctors should extensively discuss their point of views on the matter of organ donation through dialogues and discourse to make an acceptable approach according to Islamic jurisprudence and remove misconceptions. Dr. Amjad Saqib shared the working of Akhuwat Foundation, the way it is enlightening the society that itself speaks volume through supporting 3 million families across the country. He moved the audience through his illuminating ideas and vision and also declared his will to donate his and his wife’s corneas on the occasion, surely becoming an agent of change for the greater cause. Prof. Dr. Khalid Masood Gondal & Prof. Khalil Rana also addressed the occasion and appreciated the initiative and services of COAVS and Akhuwat.
